5/9/2023 0 Comments Startide rising by david brinThe book follows the crew of the Streaker, a starship from Earth - but it isn't crewed by humans! Instead, its the first ship captained and crewed by dolphins, who humanity has 'uplifted' by helping to accelerate their evolution (along with chimps). Here's the setup (no spoilers, but still putting in spoiler tags in case you like to go in totally blank slate): It's also nice to take a break from the often-dour outlook of modern sci-fi and read a book where humans are the unapologetic good guys fighting against the institution of galactic slavery. The story is gripping, funny, and full of interesting, novel ideas. Startide won both the Hugo and the Nebula in 1984 - so I'm certainly not the only one who loved it. In Children of Time Adrian Tchaikovsky called the effort to accelerate evolution 'The Brin Project' - definite nod to this series!
